Which photo is suitable for diamond painting?
Not every photo produces a beautiful diamond painting result. With the right choice you avoid disappointments and get the most out of your project.
Photos that work well
The best photos for diamond painting have a few common characteristics. They have sufficient contrast between foreground and background, clear shapes that remain recognisable at lower resolution, and a limited but rich colour palette.
Good choices
- Portraits with clear facial contours
- Pets against a calm background
- Landscapes with strong colour contrasts
- Flowers and nature close-ups
- Artworks and illustrations
Less suitable
- Dark photos with little contrast
- Group photos with small faces
- Photos with lots of fine details
- Blurry or out-of-focus images
- Photos predominantly in one colour
The importance of size
A photo that doesn't look good at 30x40 cm can be beautiful at 60x80 cm. This is because a larger canvas contains more drills, preserving finer details. Our preview tool shows you exactly at which size your photo is shown to best effect.
As a rule of thumb: for photos with lots of detail (portraits, pets) choose a size of at least 40x50 cm. For simpler compositions such as landscapes or abstract patterns, a smaller size can work fine.
This page is about photo suitability. If your question is mainly which canvas size to choose, use the dedicated diamond painting size guide for your photo.

Square or round?
The drill type affects how your photo looks as a diamond painting. Square drills (2.5 mm) fit seamlessly together, making the end result crisper and more detailed. They are popular with experienced diamond painters who appreciate a mosaic-like effect.
Round drills (2.8 mm) leave small gaps between drills, creating a softer, more painterly effect. They are easier to place and therefore ideal for beginners or for projects where you want a looser, more artistic look.
